Favorite dog friendly hotels in MX

Mayan Monkey- Tulum

5/5 Biscuits

This hostel/hotel in Tulum was by far my favorite out of everywhere we stayed, extremely dog friendly, vegan friendly, and close to both sides of town. The staff was amazing, the food was amazing, and it was one of the only hotels where you could chill with your dog right by the pool.

There were so many things that made this spot truly unique. First off, they have regular DJ nights on the roof every night so if music and loud noise is not for you, than this is not the right spot. But if you enjoy having something to look forward to every night and some weekly karoke this spot is great. Also the pool is right on top of 711 which is downstairs. Having 711 right outside was an added bonus.

This place functions as a hostel and a hotel so the rates and rooms are dependeant on which option you choose. They have on site laundry, a full kitche with fridge/freezer, a work space, and daily yoga in the mornings.

We had a room with two queen size beds and another amazing feature was not only did we have our own toilets but we also each had our own shower room and sink.

Also breakfast was included with our room every morning, you had the option of which entree, coffee, and a juice or fruit bowl. I was obsessed with the vegan Enfrijoladas and Cosmo was too.

The staff here was great. Cosmo had a hard time adjusting to some of the sounds and people coming and going and they all came and made friends with him every day and helped him overcome is overstimulation and fear.

Cosmo was one of only about 2 or 3 other dogs I saw while we were there. We spent 2 whole weeks at this hotel as it was central to everything Tulum had to offer, was a great price, and actually saved us money since we got breakfast every day and had access to where we could store food and do laundry.

We also had a nespresso in our room where they provided us with daily coffee. You really can’t get any better than this.

While the location of this hotel isn’t as awesome as being right on the beach, it was only a 10 minute drive from the beach. A lot of people were renting bikes and riding down there. It is only 5 min from the ruins and also only 5 min from downtown.

I regularly miss the 2 weeks we lived here and wish I could go back every couple of months just for the breakfast!

The beds were comfortable, hot water every day, and tv was good.

The inside of Mayan Monkey is gorgeous with a lounge area where yoga is done in the mornings, a work space, and kitchen.

The dog friendly hotel room was big and spacious.

Cosmo developed a love for black beans.

Neutro Hotel -

San Cristobal

‍ ‍

4/5 Biscuits

Neutro was an extremely charming boutique hotel right on the edge of San Cristobals main hub with all of the best restaraunts, cafes, and shops just walking distance.

San Cristobal was definetely one of my favorite cities I have ever been to in Mexico. The culture and vibe of the people here is unlike anywhere else and the drive through the jungle into the mountains to get here was also an unforgettable experience I am truly grateful for.

I will focus more on what San Cristobal has to offer in my individual city series as this article is just about dog friendly hotels.

Neutro overall was a great experience as far as decor, aesthetic, bed comfort, dog friendly, and loation goes but it was not the easiest hotel for a handful of reasons.

There is not a good place to load or unload your car at this hotel and the streets are incredibly narrow making pulling over with your hazards on almost impossible. We were lucky enough to be able to park in a red zone to unload but actual parking for the hotel is around the block in a parking lot that is on a completely different street with an attendant who is not always there. It is not hard to communicate with hotel staff and organize that so that is not an issue but it makes things less convenient.

Because of how congested the city is we chose not to drive for the 4 days we were there.

The other difficult part of this hotel was we were placed on the top floor which was gorgeous in regard to view of the city, but there was an iron spiral stair case we had to lug all of our baggage up that was pretty treacherous. This staircase was also really unsafe for Cosmo and not his favorite but he got used to it by the end of the trip. I usually caried him up and down it.

Because San Cristobal is high elevation and in the mountains it was extremely cold while we were there. And this Hotels hot water was not consistent which made the stay not quite as enjoyable. Luckily the beds were adequately dressed with extremely warm blankets, so despite the rooms not having heat, I never went cold when it was time for bed. The beds were also very comfortable.

This hotel didn’t seem to be that busy while we were staying, it was decorated really well and had good energy, but the whole downstairs felt closed and the lights were usually off which made the hotel have a bit of a colder vibe. We were there in the off season though which made sense why maybe it was not as busy.

We rarely saw the staff and getting in and out was fairly easy and straightforward.

The location of this hotel is perfect for doing all the tourist activities that San Cristobal has to offer. And the restaurants here were phenomenal.

I really enjoyed walking this city everyday and trying various coffee spots, we still had so much more to try that we didn’t have time for. I would love to come back here.

Hotel Piedra De Agua - Palenque

3 /5 Biscuits

This is a hotel that I think I would have enjoyed more if the weather had been a bit hotter and the pool a bit cleaner.

Also the lobby was decorated really nicely with a full bar set up but nobody seemed to be working it and it would have been better if they had an active coffee bar set up for the guests.

The thing I really enjoyed about this spot was the aesthetic and that it was close to the ruins. The location of this hotel is nice if you want to be close to the ruins but it is not walking distance to anything else Palenque has to offer.

I actually did not include the first hotel we stayed at when we first arrived to this town because I probably wouldn’t stay there again. However, it was dog friendly, and walking distance to the main part of town, and the street it was on had a ton of awesome cafes and restaurants.

But this hotel experience overall here at Peirdra de Agua was more in alignment with what you hope to experience in a town like Palenque. They do a nice job of capturing an elevated jungle boutique aesthetic. Each room is a bungalow with its own hot tub outside of the room, but there is not a lot of privacy so you will most likley stay in a bathing suit for it.

While the rooms are cute and clean, the beds were not comfortable.

Mosquitos are an issue here so pack lots of bug spray.

Also these rooms are not sound proof and we happened to be staying next to some people who drank a lot and got pretty rowdy so if you are looking for a peaceful tranquil retreat or have a noise sensitive dog this spot may not be for you.

Eco Aldea Kinich Ahau- Becan

3/ 5 Biscuits

Becan was not a part of our original plan but it is a small town that is located in the heart of a ton of mayan ruin sites that are not quite as popular as some of the more well known sites. Unfortunately we were not able to go to all of them but we did make it to one.

I did enjoy the unique experience of where we stayed though as it is fairly new and totally off the beaten path.

This hotel was actually considered more of a camp/cabin experience. You drive in on a gravel road and arrive at a really cute outdoor restaraunt/lobby,check in, and get your key to your bungalow/cabin. They are still building this place out and each cabin is themed around a different part of Mexico.

Ours was themed after Chiapas and while nothing about it really reminded me of Chiapas it was still a cute spot. Because you are tucked away into the jungle a bit there were quite a bit of bugs in and around the cabin so this is definitely more of an outdoor vibe. I could see this being a good spot for people who have a large breed dog or dogs who need less people around.

You will want to bring your bug spray and check for spiders.

Hot water was also not really a thing here.

The room did provide fresh water and a fridge. There was also a lot of really great options for food on the menu at the restaurant.

Pachamaya - Cancun

4/ 5 Biscuits

Similar to Palenque we stayed in Cancun twice on this trip and I preferred our second location to our first despite the first spot perhaps being better overall for large breed dogs.

Our first spot was a condo we rented that was on the beach but overall I would most likely not stay there again so I decided to omit it from the blog. If you want a dog friendly place on the beach that is cheap with a full kitchen- I will send info just let me know.

Our last night in Cancun we stayed here at Pachamaya and while it wasn’t on the beach it was on a street that was so much better than being in heavy tourism spots (although I do love a fancy resort.)

If you want an affordable dog friendly boutique hotel in Cancun with an emphasis on wellness and walking distance to tons of great restaurants and cafes, this hotel is for you.

Great menu, great service, yoga offered, peaceful, and easy for dogs if your dog can go up and down stairs.

They also provide a shuttle to the airport, it wasn’t cheap but the ownwer of the hotel provides it and he included water for Cosmo which was a nice touch.

The room itself was clean and simple. Nothing overly special about it but not bad.

These rooms are not super sound proof so if noise is an issue for you, something to consider.

The bed I would say was not my favorite.

Overall I enjoyed my stay here and enjoyed the location the most.

Hotel Travertino - Merida

4/5 Biscuits

Unfortunately I was sick for the entire 3 days we were in Merida and I did not get to experience the city at all so I ended up sick at Hotel Travertino for 3 days, and let me tell you, it was a good hotel to be sick at.

Super clean, nice bathrooms, easy access to the car, overall pretty noise proof, hot water, and breakfast in the mornings.

I honestly can’t remember if there was a TV in our room or not, that is how sick I was but the bed was so comfortable I am grateful I got sick somewhere that I could recover easily.

The rooms here are very small and you can hear people walk by so if you have a noise sensitive dog it may not be the best spot for them. Lots of people were here staying with their dogs though.

The staff here were really nice and accommodating and I really loved the lobby even though I didnt’ get to spend any time in it.

This hotel is also on the edge of the main square and walking distance to everything Merida has to offer. I really wish I could have done all the things we had planned here.

I would stay at this hotel again.
